SOLIDARITY WITH THE STRUGGLE OF WOMEN IN IRAN CONDEMNATION OF DEATH SENTENCEB
Since June 2009 people in Iran have been in an open confrontation with the regime of the Islamic Republic.The protest movement has been radicalized even more over the past months. People have organised counter-demonstrations on days which have significant political, ideological or religious values for the regime. Chants of “Down with Khamenei”, Islamic regime’s supreme leader, “We don’t want Islamic Republic”,“Khamenei must know, he will soon be toppled”,are increasingly echoed on the streets of Tehran and other cities in the country. Pictures of Khomeini and Khamenei are burnt in different demonstrations. People are mocking religious sanctities and burn religious symbols.
Women are in the forefront of this protest movement. The whole world has been watching with admiration and astonishment their bravery and determination to fight for their rights, their freedom, against gender apartheid, against the veil and against one of the most misogynist regimes of modern time ...

GAZA-ONE YEAR LATER
European Feminist Initiative IFE-EFI wrote one year ago in the Appeal “ENOUGH”:
“Militarism and violence breed violence! Today civilians in Gaza are left in the middle of a massive destruction, without electricity, without medicines, without connection to the world, in a disastrous and inhuman situation. “
ONE YEAR LATER UNFORTUNATELY WE HAVE TO WRITE THE SAME
Benjamin Netanyahu has declared that Israel will never accept to go back to the 1967 borders and will never renounce a unified Jerusalem. Once again the Israeli leaders refuse to come back to the negociation table in search for a political solution of the conflict.
This happens in the heavy silence of the political powers of Europe that continue to keep their eyes shut for the violations of international and humanitarian law by the Israeli authorities; for the "collective punishment" imposed on the population of Gaza by the blockade; for the increasing of the numbers of settlements in the West Bank; for the construction of the wall on Palestinian territories - the wall up, then the steel wall under - built by the Egyptian authorities; for the arrest and detention in jails of over 10 000 Palestinians. The list is long and full. But EU continues the process of "upgrading" relations of cooperation with the Israeli government; upgrading a partnership that is disassociated from the respect of human rights and humanitarian law.
European and Israeli and now Egyptian governments are trying to make invisible the protests of the peace, feminist and progressive social movements. They have been openly ignoring the growing resistance of the civilians of the world.
The war in Gaza will remain the most murderous operation ever carried out by the Israeli authorities in the Palestinian territories, causing hundreds of deaths and devastating destruction for the civil population. Today Gaza remains a jail for over 1 500 000 people who have no access to the basic needs for their daily survival.
European Feminist Initiative IFE-EFI appeals anew to all the civilians of EUROPE to show their solidarity with the Palestinian people.
Our demands remain the same. European Feminist Initiative urges:
- Israel to end immediately the economic blockade of Gaza.
- The EU to speak up publicly that upgrading of relations with Israel can be done only in the light of the respect of human rights and international law.
- The EU and the USA to urgently initiate long term disarmament and demilitarisation processes globally.
- The EU and the USA to act immediately for the research of truly peaceful political solutions and work systematically to provide sustainable space where civilians, peace and feminist activists, women’s human rights and human rights organizations, secular and liberal thinkers and intellectuals together with other progressive forces and politicians can also create and negotiate own opportunities to participate and effectively influence the shaping of just peaceful solutions for their societies; in the light of the respect of all The United Nation resolutions, including UNSCR1325 and 1820 and the respect of the international law.
- The UN resolutions related to the dismantling of the settlements and the withdrawal from the Palestinian occupied territories to be urgently implemented.

Iran: A female revolution* A monumental challenge to Islam
What we are witnessing in Iran is not only a movement against a dictatorship and for political freedom; it is not only a movement against poverty and socio-economic injustice and for equality and prosperity; it is a movement against religious institution, hypocrisy, corruption and superstition. In this context, it is for cultural and moral emancipation as well. The political uprising in Iran has a strong anti-religious character.
30 years of religious oppression has created a generation, which wants to emancipate itself from any religious domination, restriction or meddling. 30 years of imprisonment by a brutal religious state, which has interfered in the most private spheres of people’s lives, a state run by the most greedy, corrupt and dehumanized men of god, has created a society ready to de-religionise itself and ready to rid itself of religious rules and customs. Iran is on the verge of a new age of Enlightenment.

WE WILL FIGHT TO PRESERVE OUR RIGHTS!
During the last session of United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) held in Geneva from 6-9 July, a declaration where "reproductive health together with access to methods of family planning" was proposed to limit the high maternal mortality in the world often caused by complications of unsafe or unsanitary illegal abortions. All member countries have opted for the text, only Poland, supported by Ireland and Malta, voted against and vetoed the declaration.
Even if a UN declaration has no legal force in the Member States, Poland confirmed once more its official policy against sexual and reproductive rights in contradiction with the EU position. According the Polish Government’s Spokesman, Poland could accept the common position of EU in the field of reproductive health, provided the exclusion of abortion issues under other conditions than those authorized by the Polish law (threat to life or health of the mother, serious damage to the foetus, pregnancy as a result of criminal act) ...

IFE-EFI Poland Polish feminist organizations protest
Polish feminist organizations are planning a protest on 24th of January in front of Polish Parliament over a draft of an in vitro fertilization act - dubbed "Gowin's project". The project takes its name from the name of the Polish MP charged with drafting of the law by the Civic Platform, the "enlightened" pro-European right-wing party. According to the draft, only married couples where wife is less than forty years old would be granted the right to take advantage of the in vitro fertilization. The law would ban creation of any surplus embryos and their cryopreservation (the law would not authorize implantation of more than two embryos), rendering the in vitro fertilization methode completely inefficient ...

Conference « Feminists for a secular Europe » Casa Internazionale delle donne Roma 31/5 - 1/6 2008.
European Feminist Initiative organised its conference « Feminists for a secular Europe” in Rome, on May31st - June 1st in spite of persistent political obstacles and financial difficulties. This meeting gathered, in the immediate proximity of the Vatican, more than one hundred feminist activists for secularism and women’s rights, coming from 20 European and Middle East countries. This is in itself a great success against obscurantism, a powerful challenge to all fundamentalisms, an achievement of the solidarity of feminist movements and a proof of their vitality and determination. Through speeches of high quality , the convergence of the analyses and the conviction of the participants, in a warm climate of sisterhood and mutual respect, the conference showed brilliantly that the feminist movement is a necessary force in the common effort to counter the neo liberal orientation of Europe and to build a truly democratic Europe ...
